A great work of art is like a dream; for all it's apparent obviousness it does not explain itself and is always ambiguous. A dream never says "you ought" or "this is the truth". It presents an image in much the same way as nature alows a plant to grow, and it is up to us to draw conclusions

Why, a canvas I have covered is worth more than a blank canvas. That-believe me my pretensions go no further-that is my right to paint, my reason for painting, and by the Lord, I have one!
